THE OPEN VALLEY

The kingdom on foot, on water, at altitude.

Ten ways to move through Bhutan — each one a different version of the same extraordinary landscape.

    Tiger's Nest Hike

    PARO · 4 HOURS

    Tiger's Nest Hike

The most iconic hike in Bhutan — 900 metres of elevation, four hours return, and by far the most rewarding. The path takes you through blue pine forest for the first hour, then exposed cliff path, then the monastery itself — clinging to the rock face above Paro valley.

    River Rafting & Kayaking

Bhutan's rivers run cold and clear from the high Himalaya, carving through valleys flanked by ancient dzongs and terraced rice paddies. We arrange private rafting and kayaking on stretches matched to your appetite — from gentle drifts beneath fortress walls to technical white-water descents through forested gorges.

    The Dochu La
& The Madman Trail

    THIMPHU · HALF DAY

The Dochu La & The Madman Trail

The mountain pass at 3,140 metres. 108 chortens arranged across the hillside. On a clear day, the snow peaks of the eastern Himalaya fill the horizon entirely. From the pass, the Madman Trail descends through Lampelri rhododendron forest to Chimi Lhakhang — the temple of Drukpa Kunley, the 15th-century 'Divine Madman' who taught Buddhism through poetry, wine, and unfiltered humour. The walk ends in the village he is still revered in today.

    Archery & Darts with Locals

Bhutan's national sport at 145 metres. Then khuru — traditional Bhutanese darts — thrown the length of a field at a small wooden target, accompanied by song, dance, and good-natured taunting between teams. Both are harder than they look and more joyful than anything else we arrange.
