    Farmhouse Dinner

    A farmhouse in the Punakha valley, built three hundred years ago. The family who lives here has farmed this land for generations. Dinner is ema datshi, red rice from the paddies outside, and ara, the local spirit. There is no menu. There is no performance. It is simply dinner in a Bhutanese home.

    On the bank of the Mo Chu river, below the valley lodge. A private chef, a four-course menu, charcoal smoke and river sound. At dusk, candlelight. The mountains disappear into dark above you.

    Breakfast at the Chorten

    A dawn hike through rice paddies to Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten. The trail takes forty minutes. At the top, the valley spreads below in early light. Breakfast is laid in the garden. You eat before anyone else has left their lodge.

    A private helicopter lifts you from the valley floor into the high Himalaya. You land on a remote alpine plateau, snow peaks on every horizon. A table is already set — linen, hot coffee, a full breakfast prepared at altitude. No trail. No crowd. Only the sound of wind and the scale of the mountains around you.

    A table in a pine forest clearing, set beside a stream. Dishes prepared over open flame by a private chef. No road noise. No other tables. The sound of water and the smell of wood smoke. One of the most requested evenings on any Ogyen & Co journey.

    The Potato Shed

    A stone shed in the Gangtey valley, built to house the autumn potato harvest. A wood-burning stove makes it warm. Candlelight. A traditional Bhutanese meal with a local musician. Start outside by the bonfire with ara. Then in, to the heat and the music.

    A chef guides you through three Bhutanese classics — ema datshi, red rice, and a seasonal vegetable dish which you will bring from the local markets you visit. You make them. Then you eat them. The best lunch on any Bhutan itinerary.
